Specifications for fit-outs, panelling and cladding may include classifications such as B-s1,d0, Class A, M1 or V0. They all refer to reaction to fire, but belong to different regulatory systems, developed in different countries and based on test methods that cannot be directly compared.

     

How these classifications apply to laminates: the case of Vetro Guardian

Vetro Guardian is Vetroresina SpA’s range of fibreglass laminates with flame-retardant and self-extinguishing properties, halogen-free and with low-toxicity smoke emissions. The range holds more than ten European and US certifications and is used where reaction to fire is a design requirement: electrical cabins; compartments and cabinets for scientific and meteorological instruments; protection for emergency equipment; temporary fire shelters. Documented applications also include construction and prefabricated structures — wall panels, prefabricated bathrooms and kitchens — bus components, truck cargo compartments, mobile workshops and clinics and, in North America, service rooms at the base of mobile phone towers. In many of these applications, the laminate is an alternative to metals: for the same function, it weighs considerably less, provides better thermal insulation, reduces condensation and resists corrosion.

Fire resistance tests:

  • EN 13501-1: B-s1,d0 at a thickness of 1.7 mm; B-s2,d0 at 1.5 mm;
  • ASTM E84 / UL94: Class A and V0 for thicknesses between 2.3 and 3.1 mm;
  • AFNOR NFP 92-501: M1 with gelcoat at thicknesses of 4 mm and 2.7 mm; M2 with gelcoat at 2.3 mm;
  • AFNOR NF F 16-101: F0 with gelcoat at a thickness of 4 mm; F1 without gelcoat at 1.6 mm;
  • UNI 9177: Class 2 for thicknesses of 1.9–2.4 mm; Class 1 at 3.0 mm.
